Your only obligation during this time is deciding amongst all the FREE Independence Day events taking place throughout San Diego County, including parades, picnics, festivals, fireworks and concerts. Big Bay Boom – Sun, Jul 4
This pyrotechnic extravaganza along San Diego Bay includes fireworks discharged from barges placed at Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero, Seaport Village and Coronado Ferry Landing. Fireworks are also discharged from Imperial Beach Pier. Avoid the parking hassles and take the trolley or one of the FREE parking shuttles. Accompanying music by 105.7, Walrus FM.
Julian 4th of July Parade – Sun, Jul 4
Head up to this historic mining town and catch U.S. Navy flyovers, a parade down Main Street with floats, music, Belgian draft horses, and mock Old West gunfights. This year’s parade honors resident John Baca, one of only 91 Medal of Honor recipients. Flyovers start at 10am.

4th of July of the 1800’s – Sun, Jul 4
Celebrate like they did in the 1800s at Old Town State Historic Park. This historic 4th of July celebration includes cannon firing, children’s games, volunteers in period attire, historic demonstrations, pie-eating contests, three-legged races, and egg tosses. Parade starts at 11:30am, activities go through 4pm.

The Morning After Mess Beach Cleanup – Mon, Jul 5
Join the Surfrider Foundation for a beach clean the morning after Independence Day festivities. You can volunteer at any five beaches: South Carlsbad at Ponto Beach, Fanuel Street in Pacific Beach (at Sail Bay), Oceanside South Harbor Jetty, Ocean Beach Pier (meet at grassy area by the end of Newport Avenue), Belmont Park (meet south of roller coaster by the boardwalk). 8-11am.
Three Penny Cinema – Fri, Jul 2 and Sat, Jul 3
The San Diego Reader is opening up their offices in Little Italy on Friday and Saturday nights for retro movie screenings. Best part – first 10 people in line pay only $0.03; everyone else pays only $3! They’re also offering raffles for movie posters from their collection, movie memorabilia auction and sale of thousands of photos from Reader movie archives. See schedule here.
History Walk in Balboa Park – Sat, Jul 3
Offshoot Tours offers an hour-long history walk, blending Balboa Park history with its wealth of architectural and botanical treasures. All tours meet at and begin from the Balboa Park Visitors Center located in the historic House of Hospitality on El Prado walkway.
Friday Night Liberty – Fri, Jul 2
This first Friday arts and culture event features open studios, galleries and performances highlighting the burgeoning arts scene at Liberty Station including Bravo School of Art and the Mandell Weiss Gallery. This month, check out Mod-Est Studio/Gallery, as well as wine and cheese receptions at fiveloaves twofish, Sophie’s Gallery and Gift Shop, and Chi Chocolate.
