While pop culture fanatics take over the streets of downtown San Diego, the rest of the county still dazzles with FREE events and diversions. Here’s a taste of what awaits you this weekend (including some FREE Comic Con surround events).

Zombie Walk San Diego - Sat, Jul 24
Check out one of the coolest and ghouliest FREE surrounding events of Comic Con. This parade of 500+ bloodied, costumed zombies weaves throughout the Gaslamp Quarter past bewildered onlookers before ending for an afterparty at Quality Social. Want to be part of the spectacle and not a spectator? All it takes is tattered clothes and your own dose of zombie, bloody makeup (no masks). See Web site for more details. The zombies start lurching at 6:15pm.
Sony Pictures’ The Green Hornet - All Comic Con weekend
Sony Pictures is introducing the comeback of the Green Hornet, the masked superhero of the 1960s television show. Step into Britt Reid’s Garage where you’ll get see his official, weapons-laden 1965 Chrysler Imperial, Black Beauty, alongside other cars from his incredible collection. Take a ride in Britt’s famous car with one of the Hornettes for… an up-close view of the advanced technology including high-powered rockets and mini-guns, created exclusively for the upcoming feature film, The Green Hornet. At the Candy Factory in Petco Park.
Brew Ha Ha now heads East on Sundays for a weekly wine and comedy show at Gio Bistro and Wine Bar in La Mesa. Headliner Chris Clobber and three incredibly funny women aptly name their show, “Three Women and a Richard.” No cover and no drink minimum…now that’s something to toast and laugh about! Pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and bring your friends to watch the adventures of Greek heroes and gods with this screening of Jason and the Argonauts at Balboa Park. Complete with a 20-year voyage, a Golden Fleece, and battles against mythical creatures while under the protection of Hera, queen of gods, this movie will bring to life the San Diego Museum of Art exhibition Heroes: Myths and Mortals in Greek Mythology.
Hot Summer Cool Coastal Bike Rally - Sat, Jul 24
While on this clue-based scavenger hunt on wheels you’ll use your puzzle-solving skills and local knowledge to navigate a fun course of scenic destination points throughout coastal north San Diego County. Contest starts at 9:30am in Encinitas.
Movies by the Lake – Fri, Jul 23
Watch E.T. on the big screen again while lounging on a blanket or lounge chair next to Santee Lakes in Lakeside. Gates open at 4pm, children games and contests starts at 7pm and movie starts at 8pm. Film is FREE, but parking is $8 per car. Bring light jackets, blankets and bug spray.
House of Lithuania – Sun, Jul 25
Revel in another culture during House of Lithuania’s lawn program at the House of Pacific Relattion’s International Cottages in Balboa Park. Watch their “Jura” dancers perform the wooden shoe dance and a lively summerfest polka. Plus, experience their traditional music and foods, such as Lithuanian-style sauerkraut and kugelis (potato pudding). Lawn program starts at 12pm.
Obon Festival - Sun, Jul 25
Experience the diverse facets of Japanese culture during this annual festival at the Vista Buddhist Temple and Japanese Cultural Center. Event showcases Japanese tea tasting, taiko drumming, calligraphy, brush painting, Bon Odori (Japanese folk dancing) and demonstrations. Japanese food for sale, too. 12-8pm
