It’s the weekend of festivals, celebrating everything from sandcastle creations to a greener planet. Whatever festival tickles your fancy,we’ve got you covered with a list of the fun and the FREE this weekend.

Sandcastle competition
U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition
Fri, Aug 6-Sun, Aug 8
The U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Beach kicks off  Friday with a 21+ dance Sandcastle Dance with  live music.  Check out the full-day street festival on Saturday, when food and vendor booths, entertainment, arts and crafts line Seacoast Drive. Kids and Castles Competition will be held on Saturday afternoon and the professional U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition will be held on Sunday. Over $21,000 will be awarded in cash prizes.

It’s a Green Day Festival – Sat, Aug 7
There’s no better place to be inspired for a greener planet than surrounded by lush parks with bay views and breezes. Held at Liberty Station in Point Loma, the Green Day Festival will have live entertainment by East of Echo and Subliminal Trip, raffles, exhibitors, educational workshops, speakers, mural painting, an Eco Parade, green technology booths, children’s activities presented by Nature of Art. Paul Mitchell Salons/Schools will also be on hand to provide free hairstyles. 10am-6pm

Latin American Festival - Fri, Aug 6-Sun, Aug 8
Held at the vibrant Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town San Diego, this festival showcases an  amazing array of Latin American folk artists showcasing their talents such as San Antonino embroidery, Oaxacan wooden animal carving, Guatemalan weaving, and Huichol glass beading. Plus, the event features the largest collection of authentic Mata Ortiz pottery, a centuries-old art form. Live music and mouth-watering Mexican cuisine too. 10am-8pm Friday and Saturday, 10am-5pm on Sunday.
Hillcrest CityFest – Sun, Aug 8

This popular street festival attracts 150,000 each year and is located in the heart of Hillcrest. Check out the games, activities, 250 vendor booths, beer garden, headliner concert, and food for a day merrymaking, dancing, and drinking.  And, try to be there when the large ‘Hillcrest” sign lights up – happens only once a year! 12-8pm

Philippine Cultural Arts Festival – Sat, Aug 7 + Sun, Aug 8

So many people rave about the talents and food of the Filipino people. They’re right – Filipinos rule! Come and see for yourself at the festival that celebrates the heritage of the Philippines with traditional performing arts, folk dances, songs, music, costumes and food.  10am – 5pm at Balboa Park.

Salutation Nation – Sat, Aug 7
Lululemon Athletica is celebrating their community of faithful yogis by hosting the national outdoor yoga event called Salutation Nation. For this event, the La Jolla and downtown San Diego Lululemon stores are holding a FREE outdoor hour-long Vinyasa Flow class, taught by Elka Hauck of OB Namaste. Thousands of people across North America will be rolling out their yoga mats at the same time for this countrywide event. 9-10 at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

Chula Vista Lemon Festival – Sun, Aug 8
Squeeze out a day of fun with this festival, which celebrates the heritage of Chula Vista’s moniker as “Lemon Capital of the World” in the 1920s. The festival attracts 40,000 annually with its live entertainment on 3 stages, arts, shopping, rock climbing wall, dance performances, lemon contests, a car show, carnival rides, history museum and delicious food options. 11-7pm on Third Avenue.

Screen on the Green

Screen on the Green – Fri, Aug 6
Start the weekend off with an alfresco film experience with the family during San Diego Museum of Arts Screen on the Green. This Friday, in conjunction with the San Diego Asian Film Festival, you’ll see The King of Masks (1996), about the change-mask opera art of bian lian.  Movie starts at 8pm, but arrive early to secure your place on the lawn. In front of the Botanical Building.
