In honor of Valentine’s Day, I enlisted Cupid to help put together this super-sweet list of FREE things to do this weekend. From passionate paintings to vintage aircraft to foreign films, this budget-smart guide is straight from our hearts to yours.

100th Anniversary Parade of Flight +North Island Open House — Sat, Feb 12
Did you know that naval aviation originated with our own Naval Air Station North Island in 1911? It happened when aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss taxied his seaplane to the battleship USS Pennsylvania anchored in San Diego Bay. Now 100 years later, celebrate the centennial of naval aviation with a once-in-a-lifetime aerial review of military aircraft, from the earliest days of flight up through the latest, most modern tactical aircraft . You can tour the Navy’s USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier, and there will even be a motorcycle stunt show, classic car show and live entertainment. Admission and parking is free.

Padres FanFest—Sat, Feb 12
This Saturday get some autographs from your favorite Padres players and coaches, get exclusive training from a Padres pitcher, and take a tour of the clubhouse, field, and grounds crew area and equipment. It’s fun for the whole family at PETCO Park, from 10am-5pm. Parking and entrance are free and don’t forget to wear your Padres blues for a chance to win prizes.

Ray at Night — Sat, Feb 12
From 6 to 10 PM this Saturday, see the Ray at Night Artwalk in North Park. Visit the Ray Street galleries, listen to live music and watch performance art. Both local and nationally known artists show their stuff with over 25 gallery and business venues.

29th Annual San Diego Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Fair—Sat, Feb 12 + Sun, Feb 13
See the Lucky Lions Dancers and Dragon Dance, or a kung fu demo, lantern parade, Year of the Rabbit play, Chinese long flute and zither performance, and more—and all that’s just on Saturday! Come for two days of Chinese New Year celebrations, all free for the whole family, from 10 AM to 5 PM. And, this being a FOOD and cultural fair, you won’t want to miss the delicious food booths, offering Thai Pan, dim sum, and other Chinese and not-so-Chinese delicacies.

Monthly Italian Film Screening – Fri, Feb 11
In addition to its annual festival in October, the San Diego Italian Film Festival hosts a monthly screening of modern Italian films at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.  On Friday, watch Questione di Cuore (Matters of the Heart), about a friendship between two unlikely people when they end up in the same hospital room together. All the SDIFF monthly screenings are FREE, with a suggested $5 donation.  Movie starts at 7pm, with subtitles.

Family Film Day – Sat, Feb 12
On the second Saturday of each month, the San Diego International Children’s Film Festival and the Museum of Photographic Arts holds Family Fun Day, when they screen family friendly films from around the globe, followed by hands-on activities and museum tours. This Saturday, they’re showing Kung Fu Panda.  Films screen at 1pm; museum admission not required.

Festival of Local Authors —Sat, Feb 12
The San Diego area is blessed with some remarkable local authors like Joseph Dave Bicarti, Lee Cohen MD, Laura Johnson Kohl, Bridget Smith, Joe Trash, Elin Stebbins Waldal, and Woody Wilson. If you’re a wildlife or nature lover, this is one art show/competition you won’t want to miss. More than 200 wildlife and fish artists and carvers will be featured, some them coming from as far away as Japan to showcase their work. Special focus will be on the hunting decoy, which is considered an American art form. See all of this and the featured exhibition of Pat Gilmore, the featured artist of the show. She creates amazingly realistic nature-related paintings that will blow you away!
